Lateral (Merit-based) Transfers for Peace Officers
The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for lateral (merit-based) transfers for peace officer. There are many advantages to being a lateral transfer beyond just putting your experience to work sooner, including:
- A streamlined hiring process since you have already completed a competitive process.
- Transfer a portion of your sick leave.
- A modified and condensed field training officer (FTO) program.
- Matching your current vacation accrual rates and pay in most cases.
- Continued participation in the Police & Fire Plan with the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA).
To transfer and join the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, you must currently be employed as a full-time licensed peace officer with an active Minnesota peace officer license issued by the Minnesota Board of Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
You’ll join the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office as a Deputy Sheriff and be eligible to promote to Sergeant after three years.

Deputy Sheriff Wages
- The 2024 salary range for Deputy Sheriff is $66,107 to $100,651 annually, plus overtime.
- The current contract allows a starting salary of up to $45.63 hourly or $94,912 annually, plus overtime.
- Deputy Sheriffs received an annual cost of living adjustment (COLA) of 2.25% in 2023 and an additional 2.25% in 2024 (4.5% total).
- Deputy Sheriffs also receive salary increases based on their years of service.
- Deputy Sheriffs are eligible for a variety of premium pay, including but not limited to night, Saturday, and Sunday differentials; investigator pay; K-9 (Canine); field training; and, on-call/call back pay.
- The Sheriff’s Office has off-duty employment opportunities as well as numerous overtime openings throughout the year.
- After three years of service, Deputy Sheriffs are eligible for promotion to Sergeant, with a salary range of $99k-$119k annually (plus overtime).
Uniform Allowance
- The Sheriff’s Office provides a uniform allowance of $900 per year. As a new Deputy, you will be advanced two years' uniform allowance ($1,800) to cover your uniform needs.
- A firearm, taser, radio, and chemical irritant are provided by the Sheriff’s Office at no cost to you.

Once the forms from you are received, Human Resources staff will confirm your eligibility to transfer. An interview will be scheduled and additional hiring paperwork will need to be completed prior to determining a start date. Again, the hiring process is very streamlined.
