A new 82,000 sq. ft. indoor turf facility will be built as part of the TCO Sports Garden in Vadnais Heights.
As one of only a few indoor turf facilities in the northeast metro, it will provide needed space for sports teams, families and event attendees in the community by keeping activities like soccer, lacrosse, youth baseball and softball going year-round.
The county has contracted with M.A. Mortensen Company to construct the facility, which will feature a permanent roof structure that is designed to be solar-ready. An additional 15,000 square feet of parking will be added to the sports center campus. Parks & Recreation has partnered with Ramsey Washington Metro Watershed District to provide enhanced stormwater management on site.
Project background
On April 15, 2018, due to historic snowfall in Vadnais Heights, the sports dome at Vadnais Sports Center collapsed. The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners reached consensus to build a new turf facility with a permanent roof structure to replace the former facility’s dome. Community engagement was conducted to help refine decision-making around questions such as building size and types of programming that would be supported.
As part of its exclusive naming rights agreement, Twin Cities Orthopedics will invest $1.95 million toward the facility over 15 years, including $60,000 in 2020 and $135,000 annually through 2034. Funds generated through the agreement will be used to assist with financing the construction of the new indoor turf facility.
