Ramsey County Environmental Center now open

It’s no joke — Ramsey County’s Environmental Center opened on April 1! This new facility makes it easier for residents to reduce, reuse, repair and recycle.
Services include:
- Household hazardous waste and electronics drop off.
- Food scraps, household recycling, scrap metal and plastic bag recycling.
- A free product reuse room.
The Environmental Center is located at 1700 Kent Street in Roseville. It is open year-round, Tuesdays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on county holidays and Christmas Eve.
Construction of the site started in Fall of 2023 and was completed less than 18 months later. The project prioritized sustainable building techniques to make the building and surrounding site more environmentally friendly. Highlights include:
- Geothermal energy uses the earth's stable temperature to help heat and cool the building.
- Solar panels on the roof supply renewable energy to the building.
- An infiltration basin on the site collects and filters rainwater runoff from the facility rooftop, parking lot and driveways. Infiltration basins help filter pollutants from stormwater before it reaches other water sources such as rivers and lakes.
- Reused pavers were repurposed for the outdoor education space next to the building. These pavers were salvaged from University Avenue and were removed during the construction of Metro Transit’s Green Line light rail.
- Approximately 1,770 cubic yards of compost made from food scraps was incorporated into the building’s landscape design.
The Environmental Center also has education and community rooms that will host meetings, programs and events. This includes Fix-It Clinics, a free program where residents can bring in broken household items and clothing and work with volunteers to repair them.
All are invited to join the county’s celebrations during Earth week:
- Tuesday, April 22: The first 200 people dropping off household hazardous waste or electronics receive free giveaways.
- Thursday, April 24: Open house from 6 to 8 p.m.
- Saturday, April 26: Fix-It Clinic at the Environmental Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
