Minnesota leaders unite to combat aquatic invasive species at Phalen Lake event
Governor Walz, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan, and DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen were among the notable figures who gathered at Phalen Lake today, along with zebra mussel sniffing dogs and Parks & Recreation staff from Saint Paul and Ramsey County. The event aimed to emphasize the importance of controlling, managing, and preventing the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in Minnesota's lakes and waterways.
Demonstrations at the event showcased practical approaches to combat AIS, including a decontamination unit that sprayed boats with 140-degree water to disinfect them from potential contamination.
Ramsey County Parks and Recreation announced plans to deploy a specialized decontamination unit at various boat launches throughout the summer, targeting boats that have been in waters with invasive species. Additionally, a trained force of inspectors will conduct thousands of boat inspections, complementing other preventative measures aimed at curbing the spread of AIS.
The Phalen Lake event underscores collaborative efforts among stakeholders to protect Minnesota's aquatic ecosystems. Through ongoing vigilance and community engagement, these efforts aim to ensure the long-term health and vitality of the state's lakes and waterways.
