Indigenous Peoples Day proclamation issued at community powwow
On Oct. 9 Commissioner Moran issued an Indigenous Peoples Day proclamation on behalf of Ramsey County at a community powwow celebration at American Indian Magnet School. The powwow included a feast, special performances and vendors to celebrate our American Indian community.
The proclamation was read in recognition of American Indians as this country’s original people. Indigenous Peoples Day is an important time to celebrate the rich culture, tradition and history and to acknowledge the important contributions of America’s original people.
The land in present day known as Ramsey County is located on the ancestral and contemporary lands of American Indian people and home of the original people of Turtle Island since time immemorial, and without whom, the building of this county would not have been possible and holds great historical, spiritual and personal significance for its original stewards.
Ramsey County strives to eliminate systemic racism toward American Indian people and seeks to promote practices and policies that honor the state’s original people’s roots, history and contributions and reflect their experiences to ensure greater access and opportunity.
