Updated 2023 - 2024 vaccine

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has approved one updated shot for everyone age 6 months and older.

As of Sept. 14, 2023, the CDC recommends the following:

If the last time you received a COVID-19 vaccine was more than two months ago, it’s time to get an updated vaccine.
The virus that causes COVID-19 has changed over time. The different versions of the virus that have developed are called variants.
The updated vaccine protects against the current variants that are being spread.

Why do I need an updated vaccine?

Updated vaccine shots help build protection that has decreased since your last shot, and provide better protection against newer variants. Learn more about the updated vaccine.
Getting the updated vaccine is an important part of protecting yourself from getting seriously ill from COVID-19.
Vaccination reduces the chance of suffering the effects of long COVID, which can develop from any COVID infection and last a long time.

Weakened immune system

People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised may need additional doses of the vaccine and should discuss options with their primary provider.

If you had or currently have COVID-19

Getting a COVID-19 vaccine after you have recovered from COVID-19 infection provides added protection. If you recently had COVID-19, consider waiting to get the updated vaccine until it has been 3 months since your symptoms started. If you had no symptoms, consider waiting 3 months after you tested positive to vaccinate. Learn more.

Vaccine record/card

If you need proof of COVID-19 vaccination, the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC) offers several ways to access your records. MIIC lists all your vaccines in one place, even if the vaccines were given by different health care providers in Minnesota.

Three ways to access immunization records include:

Look up your vaccine record on the Docket app.
Submit a record request to MIIC.
Request to update your vaccine record through MIIC.

If you don't or can't use the app, you can still access your record from your health care provider or through the Minnesota Department of Health.

Safety and effectiveness

COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. Millions of people in the United States have received COVID-19 vaccines under the most intense safety monitoring in US history. COVID-19 vaccines go through different studies and checks (called clinical trials) to make sure they are safe, and that they work, before they are given to the public.

In-home COVID-19 vaccine requests

Saint Paul – Ramsey County Public Health and community partners offer free COVID-19 vaccine clinics for people who are uninsured or underinsured. If you have health insurance and access to care, it’s recommended that you get the updated COVID-19 vaccine from your regular provider or another site that can accept health insurance.

You can get an updated vaccine at any clinic, even if you got other doses somewhere else.
The 2023 - 2024 updated vaccine is available at these clinics.
Masks are recommended.
